College Counseling Institute for School Counselors

The Northeastern Illinois University School Counseling Program, the Illinois School Counselor Association, and the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling are excited to sponsor the College Counseling Institute for School Counselors hosted by  on June 29, 2022 from 9AM-4PM. The workshop will be held on the El Centro campus (3390 N Avondale Ave, Chicago, IL 60618). 

This professional development opportunity is designed for school counselors with zero to three years of school counseling experience or in a new role assisting students and their families in the college search and application process; graduate students in school counseling programs are also welcome! The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Beth Gilfillan, Assistant Professor of School Counseling at NEIU. Participants will have the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions led by Dr. Gilfillan and other leaders and experts in the college counseling field. 6 professional development hours will be provided through ISCA.

Topics include: 

• Developing your college counseling programs (including incorporation of MTSS)

• Building collaborative relationships & involving families in the post-secondary planning process

• College access counseling for diverse student groups, including first generation college students

• Incorporating career counseling into your program

• Current trends in college admissions

• School counselor responsibilities and timelines

• Financial aid processes

• Resources in college counseling

• Ethics in college counseling

• And more! 

The program will include lunch and an information session about Northeastern Illinois University. All-day parking for the workshop will be $5 (paid when you park).

The price will be $50 for ISCA or IACAC members, $100 for non-members, and $25 for current school counseling graduate students. Preference will be given to school counselors currently working in high schools and graduate students who will be doing their practicum/internship in fall 2022.
